SUMMARY:LGBTQ STUDY GROUP w/ DANIEL POLYAK\, LP\, MA
DESCRIPTION:LGBTQ STUDY GROUP of the William Alanson White Institute invites you to a conversation with:   \nDANIEL POLYAK\, LP\, MA   \nFeeling Comfy in Gender: Investigating Gender Anxiety in Psychoanalytic Training \nWed. Feb 1\, 2023 \n8:30 – 10:00 pm (EST) \nGender anxieties exist in psychoanalytic training environments. This is not controversial. But these anxieties are typically unthought and unaddressed. Given these realities\, how does a psychoanalyst find their way to working analytically with transness? Daniel Polyak will explore this question through the discussion of case material and the transphobic anxieties that can arise when this material is presented in the context of psychoanalytic training. \nDaniel Polyak\, LP\, MA is a New York City based psychoanalyst and psychotherapist. He also teaches in the Women and Gender Studies program at Hunter College. He has published and presented on a range of topics including the intersections of queer theory and psychoanalytic practice\, the clinical relevance of cisgender\, and the implications of psychoanalytic practice in a neoliberal context. He is the author\, most recently\, of a chapter called “On Growing Up: A Cautionary Tale for Psychoanalysts” in the edited volume The Queerness of Childhood: Essays from the Other Side of the Looking Glass (2022). \nFor inquiries regarding the LGBTQ Study Group please contact Esin Egit\, PhD (Chair): e.egit@wawhite.org

SUMMARY:The Artist Study Group
DESCRIPTION:The Artist Study Group of The Psychotherapy Service for People in the Arts presents Relational Public Art:  Solidarity\, Tourism\, Witnessing and Transforming Spaces in Occupied Palestine and Israel with Susan Greene\, PhD \nThursday\, February 2\, 2023\, 1:30-3pm \nAn Online Presentation \nJoin us via zoom at: \nhttps://wawhite.zoom.us/j/8180152948?pwd=cDkrUTlMSndQendyZzhnc054c0tpQT09 \nIn this presentation\, Dr. Greene will reflect on two community mural projects produced with Art Forces\, an art/activism organization she founded and directs. The first project took place from 2004-2011 with the Aamer family\, Palestinians who live in Mas’ha village in the West Bank. The Aamers live surrounded on four sides by the wall Israel has erected across the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The Aamers invited Greene\, international artists/activists\, and Jewish Israeli solidarity activists to work with them to paint a mural on the 24-foot wall they see when looking out of their front door. The second ongoing project\, entitled “I Witness Silwan\,” is located in Silwan\, East Jerusalem. Large-scale images of the eyes of local\, national\, and international leaders\, artists\, writers\, philosophers\, and more are being installed on the hillside\, visible from miles away\, including from Israeli tourist sites. Dr. Greene’s interrogation includes: In what ways have the murals changed or shifted the psychology of spaces; what is solidarity in this context of military occupation; how do the murals challenge dominant ideology and heritage tourism in East Jerusalem; and what are some of the dynamics of creativity and coping with trauma. \nWe look forward to an enriching study group discussion! \nSusan Greene\, Ph.D.\, is the director of US based Art Forces.  She is an interdisciplinary artist and clinical psychologist. Her practice traverses cultural arenas including video\, new media\, public art and murals.  Greene’s work focuses on the psychologies of space\, intersections of trauma\, creativity\, memory\, resilience and resistance. Specifically\, she is concerned with the ways in which architecture and tourism reinforce and reimagine borders\, migrations\, environmental and racial justice and decolonization.  She has a private practice in Bay Area\, CA. \nFrances V. Dillon\, MSW and Eric Dammann\, Ph.D.\, \nArtist Study Group Co-Directors

SUMMARY:Center for Public Mental Health presents Kenneth Barish
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Public Mental Health \nInvites You to \nWhy We Disagree: \nAnd How Can We Come Closer Together \nby \nKenneth Barish\, PhD \npresented via Zoom \nTUESDAY\, FEBRUARY 7\, 2023 \n11:45AM-1:00PM/Eastern \n  \nAbout the talk: \nRespectful and constructive dialogue is vanishing from American political life. There is perhaps no more urgent question for American society today than how we can listen and talk with each other constructively\, with less hostility and contempt. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Barish will offer answers to three questions: (1) What is the essence of conservative and liberal political opinions? (2) Why do we become conservative or liberal? (3) How can we talk together in a more productive way? He will present an understanding of liberal and conservative political ideologies\, drawing not only from politics but also from liberalism and conservatism in other spheres of life – in science\, religion\, and language. \nDr. Barish will then describe principles of constructive dialogue and reasoned debate among people who disagree. He will show how opposing groups\, motivated and inspired by different concerns\, may still share common goals; how we can listen and talk with each other with greater charity and humility; how extremism can be avoided; how ideology can be changed into pragmatism; and\, when we continue to disagree\, when we firmly believe that our opponents are wrong\, how we can discuss our differences with at least a modicum of understanding and respect. \nKenneth Barish\, PhD\, is on the faculty of the William Alanson White Institute Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program and the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. He is also Clinical Professor of Psychology at Weill Medical College\, Cornell University and Visiting Professor\, Tongji Medical College\, Huazhong University of Science and Technology\, in Wuhan\, China. \nKen is the author of How To Be A Better Child Therapist: An Integrative Model for Therapeutic Change (W. W. Norton\, 2018) and Pride and Joy: A Guide to Understanding Your Child’s Emotions and Solving Family Problems (Oxford University Press\, 2012). Pride and Joy is winner of the 2013 International Book Award and the 2013 Eric Hoffer Book Award. \nIn addition to his teaching and clinical practice\, Ken plays jazz trumpet.
